Switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy
-
Why the increase in price?
Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Mounjaro (tirzepatide), announced a significant price increase for the drug in the UK effective 1st September, 2025, with the list price rising by up to 170%. The highest dose (15mg) jumping from around £122 to £330 for a month’s supply. This adjustment was made to align the UK’s pricing more closely with other European markets and developed countries, as the initial UK launch price in February 2024 had been set “significantly below” those levels to expedite NHS availability and prevent delays. The increase does not affect NHS patients, who benefit from separate negotiated rates, but it impacts private prescriptions, potentially leading to higher costs for consumers unless pharmacies pass on discounts. Making price comparisons and discounts as relevant as ever.

How do Mounjaro and Wegovy differ?
Mounjaro and Wegovy share a lot in common, both being weekly injectable treatments aimed at facilitating weight loss and demonstrating significant results for both men and women. Nevertheless, despite their initial resemblance, Wegovy and Mounjaro function differently, each utilising a distinct active ingredient, mode of action, and profile, with Wegovy targeting the GLP-1 hormone and Mounjaro acting on both GLP-1 and GIP hormones.

Do I have to start from the lowest Wegovy dose 0.25mg?
No, many pharmacies recommend following an “equivalent dose” between Mounjaro and Wegovy. Whereas, others encourage a full “washout” period in between transferring treatments. The approach can differ, so be sure to review recommendations carefully and seek the support of your pharmacies clinical team for advice.
