What Is the Wegovy Pill?
The Wegovy pill — known clinically as oral semaglutide — is a once-daily tablet form of the same active ingredient found in the Wegovy injection. Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, a class of medicines that mimic the gut hormone GLP-1 to suppress appetite, slow gastric emptying, and regulate blood sugar levels.
Until now, semaglutide for weight loss has only been available as a weekly subcutaneous injection (Wegovy). The oral version represents a significant shift — removing the need for needles entirely and potentially making GLP-1 treatment far more accessible to a wider population.
Is the Wegovy Pill Available in the UK?
No. As of June 2026, the oral Wegovy pill is not yet available in the UK. It is currently undergoing regulatory review by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
A UK approval decision is expected in late 2026. If approved, private availability is anticipated shortly after — similar to how Wegovy and Mounjaro injections launched privately before NHS access followed. NHS availability will require an additional review by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which typically adds a further 6 to 9 months to the timeline.
The oral semaglutide tablet was approved by the FDA in the United States in 2025 for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related condition.
How Does the Wegovy Pill Compare to the Injection?
Both the pill and the injection contain semaglutide, but they work differently in the body. Clinical trials (the OASIS programme) showed the oral semaglutide tablet at 50mg daily produced meaningful weight loss — though slightly less than the 2.4mg weekly injection in head-to-head comparisons. However, for many patients, the convenience of a daily pill over a weekly injection will outweigh a modest difference in efficacy.
How Much Could the Wegovy Pill Cost in the UK?
Pricing has not yet been confirmed for the UK market. In the UK private market, Wegovy injections currently range from approximately £200–£350 per month depending on dose and pharmacy. The oral pill may launch at a similar or slightly lower price point.
